I created this submission for the Plum Awards, which is a children’s book publishing agency. The brief for the contest asked applicants to imagine Mary Poppins as an essential worker or participating in the “Stay at Home” movement. I had so much fun imagining Mary Poppins as a postal worker. I think it’s more important now than ever to send and receive snail mail when we can’t physically be together. We have our amazing postal workers on the front line to thank for making sure our messages are safely delivered to our loved ones. Mary Poppins’ original outfit showed some similarities to that of a postal worker. I loved re-imagining her look in a modern and fun way that still gave a nod to her original outfit, but also embodied that of a postal worker. I thought a unique and magical way for her to deliver the mail would be from her umbrella in the sky-Which would also ensure she was able to keep her social distance. I love adding details to my work and I thought a fun touch would be to have this magical cat sidekick somewhere in every spread. In the two spreads you can see him driving the airplane and reading a letter. I liked the idea of him having a human like characteristics.
